Resting Metabolic Rate with BodyGem- FAQ
Why would I want my metabolism measured?
A metabolic measurement will determine how many calories your body needs to meet your goals. Specifically, a BodyGem measurement might be right for you if you are: trying to lose weight, trying to maintain weight, or are interested in improving overall health and fitness
How does the BodyGem work?
The BodyGem measures the amount of oxygen you breathe in and the amount of carbon dioxide you produce, a measure of your body’s energy burning process. Your body gets energy from calories that you eat. You need calories to feed the cells in your body and to function at top level. Your body will burn or use calories in everyday activities (such as thinking, walking or even sleeping) and exercise. However, if you are taking in more calories than you are burning daily, you will gain weight.
What is metabolism?
Metabolism is the body’s process of combining nutrients with oxygen to release the energy required to power our bodies. This energy, measured in calories, is used to keep the body functioning, and to fuel daily activities and exercise. Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is the number of calories the body needs just to maintain basic body function and typically represents up to 75% of a person’s total metabolism. Your metabolism – combined with your daily physical activity – determines how many calories your body burns each day. The key to weight management is balancing caloric intake with the calories we burn.
Why is my metabolism unique?
Everyone is different. Your metabolic fingerprint can be hundreds of calories different from other people of the same age, sex, and body weight.
Why do metabolism-based programs work?
An accurate daily calorie target provides the single best piece of information available to lose weight. It allows you to set an achievable goal to keep you motivated and focused. Your metabolism determines how much you need to eat and exercise to reach your goals. A nutrition plan can be completely customized when it is based on your body’s unique characteristics. Your metabolism changes as you lose weight. Re-measurement during weight loss allows you to avoid weight loss plateaus by altering your nutrition and exercise plan to reflect changes in your body.
For the most accurate results on the day of your BodyGem metabolic test, please follow these instructions:
* Do not eat or drink anything for at least 4 hours prior to your scheduled appointment. Water is ok.
* Do not exercise for at least 4 hours prior to your scheduled appointment.
* Do not consume caffeine or nutrition supplements for 4 hours prior to your scheduled appointment.
* Do not use nicotine for 1 hour prior to your scheduled appointment.
